Based in Kwa Zulu Natal, we specialize in personalised Flyfishing Hosted trips locally and internationally, targeting various species through the year. We at Walkabout Fishing Co also offer flyfishing clinics for both fresh water (River and Stillwater Techniques and Tactics) as well as saltwater to improve your angling skills.

About Us

Leading the way is Shaun Dickson. Shaun has earned his protea colours and has represented South Africa in three FIPS Mouche World Flyfishing Championships. Competitive flyfishing has allowed him to hone his skills and techniques over the years. Shaun is proudly a brand Ambassador for Xplorer Flyfishing as well a Pro Staff member For Semperfli, an international based Fly-Tying Company.

Flyfishing has been lifelong passion, from targeting trout in mountain streams and lakes to pursuing toothy critters along our amazing coastline.

A dream of sharing my knowledge and experiences is now a reality, offering you opportunities to grow as fly fisherman and enjoy the thrill of the chase.

Swartberg Trout Fishing – Winter Stillwaters

These still waters are on private farms not accessible to the public, with very little fishing pressure these dams offer an angler a chance of some memorable catches. Three days fishing on various dams offer the angler a chance to target trophy trout on amazing dams.

Barkley East - Seasonal

The beautiful Barkley East area is a fly-fishing mecca. This is river anglers paradise whether targeting trout on the smaller tributaries or a mixed catch of Smallmouth yellowfish, largemouth yellowfish trout and muddies on the Kraai River. This fishery offers anglers of various skill levels an opportunity to get onto the water and make memories.

Sterkfontein – Seasonal

“Sterkies” is one of South Africa’s premier locations to target smallmouth yellowfish on dry fly. With is rocky shorelines and gin clear water it allows angler a chance to target these incredible species on light leader setups on the surface. We target these amazing fish off a fully equipped 19ft ski boat customized for the fly angler which allows us to travel this expanse of water in search of golden slabs.

Clinics

Both group clinics and one on one technique clinics are available. Whether you want to improve a particular skill or are a beginner there are various clinics run through the year including Dry Fly on rivers, Modern Euro Nymphing, Stillwater tactics and Shore based salt water flyfishing. Our aim is to improve your understanding of the various techniques allowing you to get more out of your time on the water pursuing your passion.

Pongolapoort Dam (Jozini) – Seasonal

Jozini is home to the infamous Tiger Fish - aka striped water Dog for obvious reasons. This amazing fishery allows anglers to target these toothy critters on our doorstep. Targeting this incredible fish is done off a fully equipped 19ft ski boat customized for the fly angler in both shallow structure and deeper drop offs. Early mornings and late evening mostly involve shallow top water explosive action but most of the fishing is more structure related sub surface tactics.

2 anglers per day (minimum 3 days on the water)

Offshore -Seasonal

Offshore flyfishing is for the most part a summer affair, with early launches and the chance to present a fly to various pelagic species on offer is a must for any fly angler. The main target species is the Dorado aka Popcorn Bream which can be found in and around offshore structure. These is an incredibly aerobatic fish with powerful eats and blistering runs, however the ocean can throw up some surprises so be ready. Custom packages are available upon request.
